Nothing Phone (2) is Coming in 2023 Including in the US

Nothing, the company that received quite a lot of buzz for its Android-based Phone (1) last year announced that a Phone (2) is coming later this year. Carl Pei, the CEO of Nothing also confirmed in an interview with Inverse that the Phone (2) will get an official release in the US.

“We decided to make the U.S. our No. 1 priority in terms of markets,” Pei said. “We couldn’t do it earlier because we were only in our second year and our hands were tied building the team as we were building the products. Now as we’re on a more solid footing, we can take a step forward.”

Pei, who previously co-founded OnePlus back in 2013 acknowledged that his new company wasn’t in a hurry to release a successor to the Phone (1). This phone had a distinctive transparent design with “glyph lights” on the back that light up with notifications or when the phone is charging. Under the hood, though, the Phone (1) had midrange specs with a  Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ and dual 50MP main and ultra-wide cameras.

“We’re developing a smartphone that’s more premium than the Nothing Phone (1) and software will be a big focus area for us,” Pei told Inverse. The Nothing CEO also shared that the small company now has “close to 100 people” working on its Android-based Nothing OS. Previously, the company outsourced half of the work on the software of the Nothing (1).

It’s obviously hard for a company like Nothing to compete against established smartphone manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung. However, the Nothing CEO believes that the Nothing (2) should deliver a much better software experience that matches the quality of its hardware. “It’s going to take some time; it’s going to be step by step, so we’re not going to see the entire vision unfold immediately,” Pei said.
