Samsung Announces Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 Z Flip5

Samsung put the wraps off its new Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 at its Galaxy Unpacked event this morning. This year’s updates to the Galaxy Z series include larger screens, a new Flex Hinge, as well as faster internals.

While Microsoft has been slow to iterate on its Surface Duo line, Samsung remains one of the biggest believers in the foldables category. With the Z Flip5 and Z Fold5, the company continues to offer two different form factors, one optimized for productivity and multitasking, and the other one optimized for what the company describes as “pocketable self-expression.”

“Every day, more people choose our foldables because they offer an experience people want that they can’t get on any other device. Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 are the latest devices that prove our commitment to meeting the needs of our customers through innovative technology,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics.

Galaxy Z Flip5

The Galaxy Z Flip5 is Samsung’s latest foldable device with a clamshell form factor. The Z Flip5 introduces a new Flex Hinge with a double rail design, as well as a larger 3.4-inch cover screen.

This larger external screen, which Samsung calls the “Flex Window,” supports more widgets and customization options. Without opening the device, this Flex Window lets users check notifications, access quick settings, reply to messages with a full keyboard, make calls, and access the Samsung Wallet app.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 comes with a 6.7” Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, 8GB of RAM, and up to 512GB of storage. The camera system includes 12MP wide and 12MP ultra-wide sensors on the rear with a 10x digital zoom, plus a 10MP front sensor.

With the 3700mAh battery under the hood, Samsung promises up to 57 hours of audio listening and up to 20 hours of video consumption on the Galaxy Z Flip5. The new device is available for pre-order starting today for $999.99, and Samsung offers a free storage upgrade if you pick up the 512GB version. The Z Flip5 will start shipping on August 11

Galaxy Z Fold5

The Galaxy Z Fold5 continues to deliver a big screen experience in a foldable form factor thanks to its 7.6” Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex display. The Multi-Window View feature on the Z Fold5 lets users display 3 windows at once, with a Windows-like taskbar at the bottom that can show up to 12 apps at once. For one-handed use, the Z Fold5 still offers a 6.2-inch cover display.

Samsung says that the Z Fold5 is its most durable Galaxy Fold yet with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 external protection and IPX8 water resistance. Under the hood, the Z Fold5 comes with the same Snapdragon 8 Gen2 chip as the Z Flip5, but it offers 12GB of RAM, up to 1TB of storage, and a larger 4400mAh battery.

On the camera front, the Z Fold5 offers 50MP Wide, 12MP Ultra Wide, and 13MP Tele 3X sensors on the back with a 30X space zoom. There’s also a 4MP under-display sensor on the main screen plus a 10MP sensor on the cover screen.

For productivity scenarios, the Galaxy Z Fold5 offers an enhanced two-handed drag-and-drop feature, and the optional S Pen has been optimized to deliver a superior writing experience. Samsung says that the Z Fold5 is also great for gaming and media consumption with a display now offering up to 1750 nits of peak brightness.

The Galaxy Z Fold5 is also available for pre-order today and it will start shipping on August 11. Prices start at $1799.99 for the 256GB model, and there’s also a free storage upgrade for the 512GB model.

Galaxy Tab S9 and Watch6

Samsung also announced the Galaxy Tab S9 Series today, which comes in three different screen sizes: 11-inch for the Tab S9, 12.4-inch for the Tab S9+, and 14.6-inch for the Tab S9 Ultra. All models come with the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, up to 12GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of storage. These tablets also include quad stereo speakers and a fingerprint sensor.

The Galaxy Tab S9 series is available for pre-order today with prices starting at $799 for the Tap S9, and all models will also start shipping on August 11. It’s quite difficult to find good Android tablets that can compete with Apple’s iPads, but Samsung’s latest tablets combine premium design with decent software support. Indeed, the company promises four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates.

Lastly, the Galaxy Watch6 and Galaxy Watch6 Classic are Samsung’s latest smartwatches. They come with larger displays and slimmer bezels, better battery life, and advanced health monitoring tools. New healthcare features include enhanced sleep coaching, irregular heart rhythm notifications, and fall detection.

The Galaxy Watch6 Series is also available for pre-order in select markets today, with general availability starting August 11. Prices start at $299.99 for the aluminum Galaxy Watch 6 and $399.99 for the stainless steel Galaxy Watch6 Classic, which also comes with a physical rotating bezel and a hybrid eco-leather band.
