Google Brings Native Translations to Gmail on Mobile

Google announced last night that it is bringing native language translation capabilities to Gmail on Android and iPhone.

“For years, our users have conveniently translated emails in Gmail on the web to over 100 languages,” a new post to the Google Workspace blog notes. “Starting today, we’re excited to announce a native translation integration within the Gmail mobile app that will enable you to seamlessly communicate in a wide range of languages.”

Gmail’s native language translation feature is exposed as a dismissable banner at the top of messages that include a language that is different than your default language (as configured by the setting “Google.com Mail display language” in account settings). You can tap the banner to translate the message, and can configure Gmail to always translate or never translate specific languages. Those who opt-out of this feature can still access it via the three-dot menu.

This feature is available now for those with Google Workspace and personal Gmail accounts, though it could take up to 15 days to roll out on Workspace.
