Microsoft announced today that its Seeing AI app is finally available on Android. It launched on the iPhone back in 2017.

“As we celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), we are launching the newest version of Seeing AI, powered by the latest advances in AI at Microsoft, and sharing that it is now available for the first time on Android devices via the Google Play Store,” Microsoft Seeing AI founder and lead Saqib Shaikh wrote in the announcement post. “With today’s Android availability, Seeing AI is now available in 18 languages with a plan to increase to 36 languages in 2024.”

Seeing AI narrates what’s happening in the world around the user, giving blind and low-vision people a way to experience life in ways that might otherwise be impossible. It can identify people and everyday objects, describe faces and expressions, provide descriptions of photos, read mail, scan barcodes, and more. And thanks to feedback, the latest version of the app also supports new generative AI features like richer descriptions of photos and the ability to “chat” with a document by asking questions and having Seeing AI answer based on the document’s contents.

Microsoft says that it will continue to work with the community to improve Seeing AI and that customer feedback will continue to be critical for new AI-powered enhancements to future versions of the app. “As the motto goes, ‘nothing about us, without us’,” Shaikh added.
