Samsung is pulling the plug on its DeX for PC app, which allowed users of recent Galaxy phones to access their phones from their PCs. The experience is quite similar to what Microsoft offers with its integrated Phone Link app on Windows 11 and Windows 10, and that’s why Samsung may want to stop investing resources into a duplicate solution.
The discontinuation of Samsung’s DeX for PC app was first spotted by Android Authority, which saw the news in a little note on Samsung’s UK website. “The DeX for PC on Windows OS will end support from One UI 7 version. We encourage customers to connect mobile phone and PC through the Link to Windows feature,” the company explained on its DeX page for UK users.
On a separate page dedicated to Samsung DeX, the company’s PC-like experience that’s accessible when a Galaxy smartphone or tablet is connected to a monitor, the company displays a slightly different message. Under the link to download the Samsung DeX app for PC, a note says “The DeX for PC service for Mac/Windows 7 OS was terminated.” The Windows installer for the app is still available as of this writing, however.
Again, it’s important not the confuse the DeX for PC app, which is going away in favor of Microsoft’s Phone Link app, with Samsung DeX. The DeX for PC app offered a phone mirroring experience on Windows, while Samsung DeX is more similar to the “Continuum” experience that Microsoft developed for high-end Windows 10 Mobile devices connected to a monitor. While Samsung DeX probably isn’t a killer feature on Galaxy phones, it’s not going away.
As for Samsung’s upcoming OneUI 7 update that will officially drop support for DeX on PC, it’s expected to launch in beta soon. A leaked marketing video that was recently shared on X promised a “sophisticated new look” with “AI powering every step.”
