The Google Maps app on iOS can finally remember where you parked your car. When using the app for car navigation, the app will now automatically put a pin on the map when users are done driving. The pin will automatically disappear once users leave their parking area.
Rio Akasaka, Senior Product Manager for Maps at Google, announced the new feature in a LinkedIn post (via 9to5Google). The Google Maps app already lets users save their parking location manually, but on iOS, this can now be done automatically. A support page also mentions that parking locations will only be saved for 48 hours, and the feature can also be disabled in the app’s settings.
Google Maps uses Bluetooth, USB, or CarPlay disconnections to detect when a car has been parked. Alternatively, users can let the Maps app use their motion to automatically detect if they’re driving or parking.
As you may know, Apple Maps and even Google Waze have both been able to automatically remember your parking location for many years now. It’s strange that it took so long for Google Maps to finally catch up, and it’s also notable to see this feature coming first to iOS. While we don’t know when Google Maps on Android will start saving parking locations automatically, users can do it manually in the meantime.
