Google Back-to-School Sale Offers Big Discounts on Pixel, More

The Google Store is having a back-to-school sale right now, with big savings on Pixel, Pixel XL, and more.

You can find out more about the sale on the Google Store website. But here’s a roundup of the key savings:

Pixel and Pixel XL are up to $200 off, and you get a free Daydream View VR headset. Google is finally pricing its flagship handsets somewhere close to Nexus territory (which is where pricing should have been all along). A 32 GB Pixel is now $524 (normally $649), and the 128 GB version is $100 more. The 32 GB Pixel XL is now $569 (normally $769), whereas the 128 version is $669 (normally $869). Also, every Pixel/Pixel XL purchase comes with a free Daydream View VR headset.

Google Home is $20 off. This isn’t a particularly notable deal, as Google Home is often on sale, but you can pick up the firm’s digital assistant appliance for just $109 during this sale.

Buy a Google Wifi 3-pack and get a free Chromecast Audio. This isn’t unique to the back-to-school sale, but if you purchase a Google Wifi 3-pack for the normal $299 price, you get a Chromecast Audio (a $35 value) for free.

The Google back-to-school doesn’t have a definitive time frame, but the firm says the Pixel handsets are on sale “while supplies last.” Which suggests this may be tied to coming refresh.

Of my recent tech purchases, the Chromecast Audio is easily the best bang for your buck. If you use a streaming service that's compatible, and already have some decent speakers (I pulled out an old CD player that I never used anymore) it's a wonderfully simple way to get music playback in your home. Not sure it would convince me to get a Google WiFi pack though, it seems an odd tie-in. They may be trying to offload the Chromecasts, you'd expect them to release a new model with USB-C power soon.

Chromecast Audio is easily one of the best inventions Google has made. We use it every weekend for most of the day. I'd rather put together my audio system them buy a SONOS. It's a shame more people don't know about this. Works great with the Google Home. Once you made a group in the Home app you can just say to Google Home "OK Google, Play Pandora on the Home Group" and if the group that you made is called Home it will just pay it on that groups speakers. We don't have a big place (1200 sq ft) so we have the living room and kitchen on the group.

Do you think this is a true back to school sale or Google dumping inventory before the next Pixel is released? Any idea when the next Pixel phones are to be released?
