Google Rolls Out the January Pixel Update

January 2024 software update for supported Pixel phones and Pixel Tablet

Google last night announced the January 2024 software update for supported Pixel phones and Pixel Tablet running Android 14.

“We have provided the monthly software update for January 2024,” a new post to the Pixel Phone Help blog on Google Support notes. “All supported Pixel devices running Android 14 will receive these software updates starting today. The rollout will continue over the next week in phases depending on carrier and device. Users will receive a notification once the OTA [over-the-air update] is available for their device. We encourage you to check your Android version and update to receive the latest software.”

The January 2024 software update for Pixel is available for Pixel 5a (5G), 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a, 8, 8 Pro, and Pixel Fold phones, and Pixel Tablet.

In addition to providing a monthly roundup of security fixes, this update also includes the following fixes:

  • Camera. A fix for an issue that caused the Camera app to crash “in certain conditions.” (I may have just experienced this bug on my Pixel 8 Pro, as it hung the phone and then rebooted twice when I tried to scan a QR code yesterday; it worked on the third try.)
  • User interface. Fixes for three issues: A flashing black screen when playing video in certain conditions on Pixel 8 series only, a hung Setup Wizard in certain conditions on Pixel Tablet only, and wallpaper on the home screen showing black in certain conditions.

My Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Tablet both received the update this morning. Oddly, my Pixel Watch 2 also received an update, but looking up the version history there, I believe this was just the December update belatedly installing.
