Google is Rolling Out Motion Assist on Android

For the past few years, Apple has offered a motion sickness solution called Motion Cues on its devices, and though it’s a little strange looking, my daughter and I have both had great success using it. But now, a similar feature is coming to Android too.

Android Authority reports that Google has begun rolling out a feature called Motion Assist on Android 17 phones and devices, starting with Pixels. When installed, you can enable the feature in the Settings app (under Your profile > All services > Personal & device safety), and it will automatically activate when the phone detects it’s in a moving vehicle, or you can toggle it on/off using a Quick Settings tile.

I’m not seeing this option on my Pixel 11 Pro, and it’s not clear what the rollout timeframe is. But as with Apple’s Motion Cues feature, Motion Assist displays slowly animating circles on the edges of the device display that correspond to the movement detected, and this display reduces motion sickness. Motion Assist lets you customize the color, shape, and opacity of the dots, and you can configure those features to be selected randomly on each use.

I routinely see Motion Cues on my iPhone and iPad Pro in cars and airplanes and, as noted, it works well. So this should be a nice update for Android users that get queasy using their phone in a moving vehicle.
