Google revealed today that it acquired Cameyo, which makes an app virtualization service for ChromeOS called Virtual App Delivery. I assume it will make this technology part of ChromeOS for Enterprise.
“We’re thrilled to announce that the Cameyo team is joining Google,” the ChromeOS team announced. “This exciting development marks a significant milestone in our mission to make legacy applications accessible and easy to manage within the ChromeOS ecosystem. By bringing the Cameyo team’s expertise in-house, we are doubling down on our commitment to delivering a streamlined experience for virtualized applications.”
Virtual App Delivery solves the final major hurdle with ChromeOS adoption: Many organizations rely on specific applications, in-house or third-party, that only run on Windows. By virtualizing those applications, rather than virtualizing an entire Windows environment on top of ChromeOS as is the case with traditional virtualization solutions, Google can now solve this problem in a way that’s as lightweight and seamless as ChromeOS itself.

Google partnered with Cameyo last year to bring Virtual App Delivery to its customers, and it was so successful, the firm decided to bring this solution into the platform.
“The future of end user computing is web-based,” Google correctly notes. “A new Forrester study commissioned by Google confirms what many have long suspected—90 percent of IT respondents envision a world where applications reside in the cloud, not on the desktop. This isn’t just a trend; it’s a fundamental shift in how businesses operate. By embracing web-based applications now, businesses can unlock improved security and reduced costs, and enhanced user experiences.”
Google will host a webinar tomorrow, June 6, that will discuss the Forrester study further and discuss how businesses can use ChromeOS to modernize.
