Yesterday, we learned that Google is “combining” ChromeOS and Android into a single platform. Today, we got some clarification on what that means. And it’s good news for Chromebook fans.
This mysterious combining of Google’s personal computing platform has obviously been years in the making, and it follows a series of strategy reversals in which Android and/or ChromeOS was, at any given time, the way forward for Google on devices with larger screens. The arrival of beefier Chromebook Plus laptops in late 2023 muddier the waters even further.
But it appears now that the way forward includes both ChromeOS and Android, with ChromeOS being built on an Android back-end, which allows it to take advantage of that platform’s scale and popularity while still continuing to deliver all the benefits of ChromeOS on laptop form factor devices aimed at schools, individuals, and businesses.
Here’s how we got there. Last year, Google announced that it was moving key parts of the Android software stack over to ChromeOS. That has apparently been successful enough that it is now moving the entire underlying Android software stack to ChromeOS, which led to the comments this past week from a Google executive that it was combining the two platforms. But because this confused many, that same executive has now provided a few more details that should assuage any fears that ChromeOS is going away.
“Great to see so much interest in this topic!” Google president Sameer Samat wrote on Twitter/X. “To reiterate what we announced in our 2024 blog post: we’re building the ChromeOS experience on top of Android underlying technology to unlock new levels of performance, iterate faster, and make your laptop and phone work better together. I’m excited about it!”
The blog post he references is from June 2024, and it’s the source of that “key parts” link above. It’s not as clear that this was how Google was moving forward as he implies, and his more recently comment about “combining” ChromeOS and Android was understandably confusing. But whatever. This is good news: Android will continue forward as the OS for phones, folding devices, and tablets. And ChromeOS will continue forward as the OS for laptops, including premium laptops with Chromebook Plus capabilities.
Put another way, Android with its upcoming Desktop Mode will not replace ChromeOS on laptops. Good.
