With the clock ticking on its promised October preview, Microsoft today said it was delaying Windows 11’s Recall feature again, this time until December.
“We are committed to delivering a secure and trusted experience with Recall,” a Microsoft statement vaguely explains. “To ensure we deliver on these important updates, we’re taking additional time to refine the experience before previewing it with Windows Insiders.”
As you all know, Microsoft announced Recall as the marquee AI feature exclusive to Copilot+ PCs back in May, and it originally expected to ship the feature in the initial release of Windows 11 version 24H2 in June. Recall was never a security concern thanks to the incredible protections built into the Copilot+ PC platform, but Microsoft delayed its release after a lot of negative feedback. And then it delayed its release again, until October. And now it is delayed a third time, until December.
As before, Recall will ship first in preview. It will only be made available on Copilot+ PCs that have the security protections that make it safe. It will not be provided to other PCs, nor will it be installable on them. And no, Microsoft is not secretly installing or enabling Recall in the background, as some YouTube idiots claim. This is, and always has been, Copilot+ PC-only.
And those who don’t want it will be able to fully uninstall it. The conspiracies theories aren’t even theories, they’re lunacy.
I’m looking forward to testing Recall. Indeed, I specifically brought my Copilot+ PC to Mexico this month so I could do so. But I can wait. I guess I have to.
