Apple Releases Safari 14 for macOS Catalina and Mojave

Apple normally ships new versions of its Safari web browser with new macOS releases, but the firm didn’t release macOS Big Sur this week alongside iOS 14, iPadOS 14, tvOS 14, and watchOS 7. To somewhat make up for that, it has instead released Big Sur’s Safari version for older macOS versions.

“Safari 14.0 introduces new features, even faster performance, and improved security,” the release notes explain.

New features include:

– New tab bar design shows more tabs on screen and displays favicons by default

– Customizable start page allows you to set a background image and add new sections

– Privacy Report shows cross-site trackers that are being blocked by Intelligent Tracking Prevention

– Removes support for Adobe Flash for improved security

I’m curious why macOS Big Sur hasn’t been released, but my guess is it’s related to the coming release of the first Apple Silicon-based Macs.

I would guess it will be in October with the next event for the iPhone and new Apple ARM Macs…along with possibly iOS 14.1

Big Sur is probably still too buggy; we'll probably see it in October.

You might want to look into something that’s happening after installing Safari 14. Many people are seeing Edge issues right after installing Safari 14. For me it can’t open any pages, with an “Error Code 6” and all extensions crash.

Microsoft Edge dev team has acknowledged the issue and will provide an update shortly. I'm still waiting for them to fix the unclickable buttons at the top of web pages when you open Edge in full screen on macOS. Lots of weird UI glitches. Oh, and tab/history sync would be nice, too. :-)

Big Sur isn't ready. I have the beta on one of my test machines.

Getting closer, though.

They need (in my opinion) three more betas to make sure fixes don't bonk other things.

Yeah, live release of Big Sur is for sure synced with the first release of Mac running on Apple Silicon. For now it looks thats gonna be October 27.

Safari 14 is super-buggy on macOS Mojave 10.14. I would recommend against installing the upgrade until the bugs are worked out. Any sites with ads (especially Google AdSense ads like the ones on this site) will freak Safari out and cause constant page refreshing. Eventually the page will fail to load and you'll be stuck. I use Microsoft Edge on macOS and prefer that browser a whole lot more than Google Chrome or Apple Safari.

I quite like Safari, can’t wait to try to new version. One giant omission in previous versions was smooth scrolling – I use an app add-on called, ah hem SmoothScroll. Hopefully with this new version they’ve added this as a feature.

Unless it gets Ublock Orgin back as an extension, I wont be using it on my Mac's. I am currently running Edge as my default….with Ublock.
