Microsoft Issues New Updates for Surface Book, Surface Pro 4

If you own a Surface Book or Surface Pro 4, it’s time to head over to Windows Update and see what’s happening: Microsoft has issued new firmware updates for both machines.

Typically, we find out about these updates from the Surface Update History website. But in a strange reversal of the norm, Microsoft’s Surface Blog for IT Pros—which usually trails the update releases by weeks—has the news first.

“These updates include new drivers and firmware for NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M, Surface UEFI, Surface NVM Express Controller, Intel(R) Management Engine Interface, Surface Integration, Surface Integration Service Device, and Surface USB Hub Firmware Update on Surface Book and Surface UEFI, Surface Display, Surface NVM Express Controller, and Intel(R) Management Engine Interface on Surface Pro 4,” Microsoft’s Brandon Records notes. “On Surface Book these driver updates provide improvements to system performance and stability, storage performance, system stability on startup, battery life during sleep, and power utilization of the USB hub in the device base. On the Surface Pro 4, these driver updates provide improvements to system stability and performance, storage performance, and system stability on startup.”

Here’s what’s new.

Surface Book

  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M (v21.21.13.7667) improves system stability.
  • Surface UEFI (v90.1427.768.0) improves system stability and performance.
  • Surface NVM Express Controller (v11.0.0.1) improves storage performance.
  • Intel(R) Management Engine Interface (v11.6.0.1042) improves system stability on startup.
  • Surface Integration (v1.1.328.0) improves battery life during sleep.
  • Surface Integration Service Device (v1.0.241.0) improves device stability.
  • Surface USB Hub Firmware Update (v1.0.519.0) improves stability and power utilization of the USB hub in the device base.

Surface Pro 4

  • Surface UEFI (v106.1427.768.0) improves system stability and performance.
  • Surface Display (v1.0.6.1) updates the display panel driver.
  • Surface NVM Express Controller (v11.0.0.1) improves storage performance.
  • Intel(R) Management Engine Interface (v11.6.0.1042) improves system stability on startup.

When are we going to get the promised ability to put the Surface Dial on the screen and use it?

Anyone with Surface Book notice that post-update, the Surface NVM Express Controller driver doesn't appear in their Update History list and the driver (via Device Manager) doesn't get updated to v11.0.0.1 but remains on 10.0.14393.206?

For me, it seems that MS has enabled hibernation in 15 minutes while on battery.  I've set is to "never" in the advanced sleep settings but cannot bypass this hibernation.  Does has anyone else noticed this?

I have been using surface pro 4 for 8 months. For two months it was sitting in my suitcase (am travelling) and I did not use it all. Yesterday I tried to use and found type cover keyborad is not working / responding at all. I tried all - restarting with holding that/ this button, cleaning up keyboard, display - all. Even did a restore. But nothing helped. So thought keyboard is dead and wanted to buy a new one. When I went to the mall, technician (instead of selling a new one) took a look at my unit and tried my keyboard with a SP4 on showcase, my keyboard is working fine. Then he checked my SP4 another keyboard - that did not work. Then he told me - drivers are not updated, and that hardware is fine. I came home, did all the updates - but the problem remains. Now I am flying out to another place where no malls or support can be accessed. Also, my SP4 is not booting from USB at all. The bootable USB is working fine on other laptops. What to do? any help? Is it a possibility that SP4 connectors are damaged? But really it was inside a suitcase, type cover keyboard attached to it all the time.

I would really appreciate for any guidance.
