You Can Now Pre-Order Surface Book 2

Grab your credit cards and kiss caution to the wind, folks: You can now pre-order some Surface Book 2 models in both 13.5- and 15-inch versions.

Looking over the Microsoft Store website, it appears that the following models are available for preorder:

13.5-inch, Intel Core i5, 256 GB. $1499
13.5-inch, Intel Core i7, dGPU, 256 GB. $1999
13.5-inch, Intel Core i7, dGPU, 512 GB. $2499
13.5-inch, Intel Core i7, dGPU, 1 TB. $2999
15-inch, Intel Core i7, dGPU, 256 GB. $2499

A couple of notes here.

Inexplicably, Microsoft doesn’t (clearly, at least) specify the amount of RAM you get with each model. But the available amounts are 8 GB and 16 GB.

I don’t see any customization options. For example, you can’t order the base model, which probably comes with 8 GB of RAM, and upgrade it to 16 GB.

We know that the dGPU in the 13.5-inch versions is an NVIDIA 1050 NVIDIA GeForce with 2 GB of RAM, but the 15-inch version(s; there’s only one right now) includes 1060 NVIDIA GeForce GTX graphics with 6 GB of RAM.

The release date for each model is listed as November 16, which is next Thursday.

At least in Europe (Netherlands) the amount of RAM is indicated in the selection button:

https://www.microsoft.com/nl-nl/store/d/surface-book-2/8MCPZJJCC98C/PRL2

However, availability is backorderted to 14th of December… And only 13 inch versions.

I confess after waiting 2 years for the specs to match up (mostly) with the price and the pleasant surprise of a 15 inch model I pulled the trigger on the now Out of Stock 15" 1 TB model last night just after midnight.

Wish me luck I guess!

I preordered to give it a try. They give you a 30 day window to return. I really need a PC as opposed to a Parallels VM to do some of the work I do when traveling. After all the trouble with HP, I bought the function key MacBook Pro and have been using it since.

With my educational discount, the SB2 is 100 more than the Macbook was, but has double the SSD and a 4 core i7. Might be just what I need… If not, I'll box it up and send it back. I have high hopes that they fixed the hinge/detach problem.

I just pre-ordered the i7 13.5 inch with 256 GB SSD. Looking into the order details, there is no mention to the amount of RAM memory in this configuration. Very DECEPTIVE of Microsoft to not indicate the amount of RAM. I guess I have to wait and see what actually ships and if it is NOT 16 GB return it?

In reply to victorchinn:

Talked to the store rep and they say 256GB models only have 8GB of RAM, only 512GB/1TB have 16GB of RAM. I canceled my order for 256GB but now all the 15" models are OOS. I'm Pissed.

In reply to VasiS:

Looking on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Surface-Book-Intel-Core/dp/B076HZCP5H), all 15" models (including the 256GB SSD ones) come with 16GB of RAM. For the 13" model, the 256GB ones (both the i5 and i7 CPU) come with 8GB of RAM and the 512GB/1TB models are 16GB of RAM.

I have a reservation in on the i7 15' when it is available. Three reasons for me to move from my i7 performance base Surface Book. 1. 17 hours of battery life – exceptional for travel. 2. 15 inch screen much nicer to work with on the road. 3. It can handle VR/MR and AAA games. I just hope I am not waiting months for it.

I can't wait for Paul to tell us about how this device has 4 hours battery life, can't detach the clipboard, sleep/wake issues and wobbly while on the lap.

I have the original Surface Book and the OS works great on it. No more issues, especially after the last OS update..

I will buy the 13" i7 with 512GB SSD. The difference in battery life is big…

I’m close to buying a 15inch to replace my usual double laptop setup (one for gaming, one for work) with a single computer. However I wonder how the gtx1060 will handle games at the native resolution of the screen. Who games will look if played on FullHD?

Sadly with no 32GB RAM option I'm still out. Sigh. I've gone Dell XPS 15 and will never look back.
