Microsoft Releases Firmware Updates for Surface Studio and Surface Pro LTE

Posted on June 30, 2018 by Paul Thurrott in Microsoft Surface with 5 Comments

Microsoft has announced separate sets of firmware updates for Surface Studio and Surface Pro with LTE Advanced.

But I’m pretty sure that various other Surface PCs are getting firmware updates as well. I installed a massive set of firmware updates for the Surface Book 2 the other day, and it’s unclear what happened there.

You can see that mess in the image above. But here’s what’s going on with Surface Studio and Surface Pro with LTE Advanced.

“We’ve released new driver and firmware updates for the Surface Studio and Surface Pro with LTE Advanced (Model 1807) devices,” Microsoft’s Brandon Records writes. “On Surface Pro with LTE Advanced this update includes a new Gemalto eSIM Firmware Update, improving eSIM service stability. On Surface Studio, these updates include drivers and firmware for Surface Touch, Surface Pen Settings, and Surface Pen Pairing that enable Surface Pen advanced feature support on devices running Windows 10 version 1803 or above.”

The Surface Update History website has also been updated with information about the firmware updates. Which are:

Surface Pro with LTE Advanced

Gemalto – System – 2.8.2.1 2.8.2.1 improves eSIM service stability.

You can also download this and other Surface Pro with LTE Advanced drivers from the Microsoft Download Center.

Surface Studio

Surface – Firmware – 132.177.6.160 132.177.6.160 enables Surface Pen advanced feature support.

Surface – Human Interface Device – 21.0.17.0 21.0.17.0 enables Surface Pen advanced feature support.

Surface – System devices – 1.7.136.0 1.7.136.0 enables Surface Pen advanced feature support.

You can also download these and other Surface Studio drivers from the Microsoft Download Center.

Nothing yet on the Studio, but I have seen long lists of driver and firmware updates on Book 2, Surface Pro and Laptop in the last three days.

Paul - As you might expect my "updates" looked the same as yours. But the obvious duplicates in numbering, dates, and intended usage led me to believe that this would be a messy process. One would think that the update and download app would "read" my machine type and Win 10 version (Insider, so as of yesterday during the update it was 17704 (RS5) on a SB2, i7, 256). Strangely after about 30 minutes 28 updates downloaded and tried to install. After a restart it was 24 of 28 successes. And after another Update check, no further updates are available or needed on my machine. So, except for the question "what went on here" I seem to be updated. The process worked, but the communication twixt MSFT and us seemed occluded. Not that you have ever criticized MSFT communications before.
