Surface Laptop, Pro 4 Get Massive Sets of Firmware Updates

Did Microsoft Just Ruin Its October Surface Announcement?

Microsoft updated its Surface Laptop and Surface Pro 4 this week to improve to system stability and reliability, and to resolve potential security vulnerabilities.

“On July 25th we released updates for Surface Pro 4 and Surface Laptop running Windows 10 Fall Creators Update version 1709 or greater to Windows Update,” Microsoft’s Scott McArthur wrote in separate posts for each to the Surface Blog for IT Pros.

The security vulnerabilities are described in two Microsoft security advisories, ADV180012 and ADV180013, and are related to the Spectre and Meltdown exploits.

The list of updates for each is massive, and they appear to be identical or at least nearly so.

<p>Was really surprised when these showed up last evening on my Pro 4. Was even leery of it. Noticed all the repeats and wondered if it was legit. Investigated some on previous installs and went ahead with it. Rather quickly updated and things working fine. Nothing noticeable to talk about.</p><p> </p>

    <p>Doesn't Surface Pro 4 have 5xx graphics?</p>

<p>I see mostly drivers, not firmware. The Management Engine stuff usually gets updated with a UEFI update on other OEM machines too. Same with System Aggregator, when needed. Any of these component firmware updates usually depend on newer UEFI code to support the revision changes.</p><p><br></p><p>Tell me something: is Microsoft just rebranding Intel's insecure Management Engine firmware, or are they reprogramming the chip with their own code that isn't based on MINIX?</p>

<p>I saw all the firmware updates this morning and got really nervous that somehow my surface laptop lost all the drivers. It took three reboots but I installed all of them and it seems stable.</p>

<p>Am I a fool to think that this is the mother of all firmware updates that finally takes care of all the annoyances with SP4? Just about every driver on that list sometimes acts up when restoring from sleep, making the SP4 the least reliable PC I have ever owned. If it would just reach normal levels of reliability, it'd be a really great tablet. </p>

<p>Is there a major firmware update coming for my original Surface Book? Or is this push just for the SP4 and Laptop?</p>
