Microsoft Delivers Display Driver Fix for Surface Book, Surface Pro 4

I’ve got good news for Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 users who have been suffering from near-constant display driver crashes: Microsoft has delivered a firmware update today that it says will fix the issue.

Will it work? Frankly, Microsoft doesn’t have a good record with this kind of thing, but what the heck. If this has been infuriating you as much as it has me, you’re going to want to check Windows Update and download the fix. It’s listed as “System Hardware Update – 12/2/2015.”

There’s no word yet on Surface.com about the update, but looking at Device Manager on my Surface Book, it looks like the Intel HD Graphics 520 driver—which is the problem—has been updated to version 20.19.15.4326.

Anyway. Go grab it. This has been a huge problem.

UPDATE

Here’s what’s in the firmware update:

  • HD Graphics 520 driver update (v20.19.15.4326) improves driver stability.
  • Surface Display Calibration driver update (v1.1.381.0) supports compatibility with the updated graphics driver.
