Microsoft Finally Documents October Firmware Updates for Surface Book

Microsoft issued a new set of firmware updates for Surface Book late last week, but didn’t document the changes until today.

They are, shall we say, legion.

I read something about the firmware updates while I was in Las Vegas last week, but couldn’t confirm the release because I wasn’t traveling with Surface Book. And Microsoft wasn’t much help: The Surface updates website didn’t mention any new firmware updates.

Well, now it does. And unlike with all previous Surface Book firmware updates, this set doesn’t appear to be accompanied by a nearly-identical set of firmware updates for Surface Pro 4. I can’t explain that either.

But here’s what’s new, assuming you’re running Windows 10 version 1607.

Microsoft driver update for Surface Embedded Controller Firmware. Surface Embedded Controller Firmware 90.1277.256.0 adds support for upcoming product release.

Microsoft driver update for Surface System Aggregator Firmware. Surface System Aggregator Firmware 90.1335.257.0 adds support for upcoming product release.

Microsoft driver update for Surface UEFI. Surface UEFI 90.1327.770.0 adds support for upcoming product release.

Marvell Semiconductor, Inc. driver update for Marvell AVASTAR Bluetooth Radio Adapter.Marvel AVASTAR Bluetooth Radio Adapter 15.68.9046.79 adds support for upcoming product release.

Marvell Semiconductor, Inc. driver update for Marvell AVASTAR Wireless-AC Network Controller Marvell AVASTAR Wireless-AC Network Controller 15.68.9046.79 adds support for upcoming product release.

NVIDIA driver update for NVIDIA GeForce GPU. NVIDIA GeForce GPU 21.21.13.6936 improves pen performance in some applications.

Microsoft driver update for Surface Base Firmware Update. Surface Base Firmware Update 2.0.97.0 improves keyboard reliability when the device resumes operation from sleep.

Microsoft driver update for Surface DTX. Surface DTX 1.3.542.0 improves clipboard and keyboard interoperability.

That “improves keyboard reliability” bit is interesting: Brad and I, and many others, have been having an issue with that lately. Which reminds me: Time to install these updates.

So what I'm taking away from this is there's an upcoming product release?

Can anyone copy a large amount of data from one USB device to another with the Surface Book?  It doesn't matter if it's a card reader copying to an external hard drive or copying from one drive to another.  When I try it just stops after a bit.

That problem is often due to the "USB device" more than the computer.
