Surface Studio and Surface Pro 4 Receive Firmware Updates (Updated)

Surface Studio and Surface Pro 4 Receive Firmware Updates

At least two Surface devices are receiving firmware updates today. Among them is the first-ever firmware update for Surface Studio.

As is sadly typical, Microsoft has yet to document these updates on its Surface update history website. The Surface Studio update history page, for example, notes that “There are no available updates for Surface Studio at this time.”

Yes, now is the time. I fully expect keyboard and touch to work every time the SP4 wakes from sleep now. A year is a very reasonable time to wait, after all. I am also certain that I will finally be able to have sound over DP/HDMI, just like on a normal PC (except SP3 and SP4), even after waking from sleep. These are the firmware fixes I have been looking for.

Power button will definitely work now too.

Dang, still no cigar. I must be holding it wrong. Maybe SFC /SCANNOW will do the trick.

According to that Microsoft support forum, SFC /SCANNOW should fix every problem ever. Word crashed? Run SFC. Blue screen? Run SFC. Cracked laptop screen? Run SFC.

It is also quite amazing how Microsoft has managed to save battery during sleep with this update – by disregarding the Energy settings and always going into hibernation after ~2 hours. I should have known that my preference for 12 hours was bad for the environment and gone with the defaults to begin with. Who needs a PC that wakes instantly, anyway?

On the Studio, the firmware update was accompanied by a number of driver updates as well. Alas, I did not make note of them, and since they are not reflected on the "Installed Updates" list in Settings, I cannot say precisely what they are. I remember two audio-related drivers and one driver that used Ethernet in its description. I don’t think there were any video or streaming drivers but may be wrong.

The best thing about this set of improvements is that I previously had to roll back from FR 15007 to 15002 owing to a number of broken functions on the Studio. After the firmware and driver upgrades, I tested the 15007 waters again and found that every broken item I noticed before now works.

No getting BSODs after the SP4 w/ Type Cover 4 sleeps. Ironic, considering it was supposed to improve reliability.

Just a purely random observation. I’m sitting in a brand new Starbucks in an upscale Dallas suburb. And on either side of me are people sipping their coffee and working on Surface Pros. Not Macs. I’m going to consider this a turning point!
