Microsoft UpdateAdvisor App Will Help You Upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile

As you may know, Microsoft offers a Windows Insider app for Windows phones, giving you access to pre-release versions of the OS. Today, Microsoft shipped a similar app, called UpdateAdvisor. And this one helps you upgrade from Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows 10 Mobile 10.

Before you get too excited, it’s worth pointing out that UpdateAdvisor, unlike Windows Insider, won’t bypass your wireless carrier and just grab Windows 10 Mobile: You’ll still need to sacrifice a chicken to Verizon or whatever carrier you’re stuck with and hope for the best. But UpdateAdvisor still looks very useful.

“Update Advisor can help check if an update is available for your phone and free up space to get you started,” Microsoft explains. “It connects to the network to check for new updates, then helps you free up space for updates by recommending files that you can move to an SD card or OneDrive to make room for the update. After the update is completed, you can move the files back to your phone.”

Here’s what it does:

Helps you make space on your phone. As you might imagine, the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade is huge, and chances are you won’t have enough space to download and install it, especially if you’re not using SD storage expansion. As noted, it can copy or move files to SD or OneDrive to make space for the upgrade as needed. But it can also clear out extraneous temporary data, which is very useful.

Check for the Windows 10 Mobile. While I suspect you could simply get Windows 10 Mobile through the normal Phone Update settings app, UpdateAdvisor can also check for this upgrade too.

There are no updates today of course. Perhaps soon. For some.

You can download UpdateAdvisor for Windows Phone 8.1 from the Store. Actually, it installs on Windows 10 Mobile too, so it can most certainly used for future upgrades too.
