Google Integrates Play Movies & TV with Third-Party Services

Google has announced an update to its Play Movies & TV and Play Store apps that lets you browse content found in third-party services.

If this sounds a bit familiar, it might because Apple did the same thing when it introduced its TV app on iOS and Apple TV. But the Google integration already seems to include far more services.

“With so many different streaming apps out there, it’s not only challenging to figure out what to watch, but where and how to watch it,” Google’s Ben Serridge explains. “Google Play wants to change that. Now you can browse the latest new release movies, see which streaming app is playing your favorite show, or find something entirely new to watch with the Google Play Movies & TV app.”

According to Google, searches for movies and TV shows in both apps will now show results from a variety of third-party services too. For the initial release, ABC, CBS, FOX NOW, NBC, Hulu, HBO NOW, HBO Go, Showtime, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Now, HGTV, BET Now, Comedy Central, and many other services are available. But more partners will become available over time, too, Google says.

Google will also provide a watchlist for content you’d like to see later. And it will recommend movies and TV shows based on what you do watch. Because of course it will, they’re Google.

This could be interesting. I’ll try to test this soon.
