Roku OS 11 Finally Adds Personalization Features

Roku today announced Roku OS 11, which adds some long-overdue personalization features, including a personal photo screensaver, that other living room platforms have had for years. It’s a bit limited in some ways—it appears that you have to upload photos from your PC or phone to a Roku device for some reason—but you can also share photo streams with other Roku device owners.

“We recognize not everyone interacts with their TV in the same way, so we are proud to offer a platform full of choice, while simultaneously providing our users an easy-to-use experience,” Roku senior vice president Gidon Katz says.

More importantly, perhaps, Roku OS 11 also brings personalization to the home screen, with a new “What to Watch” top-level menu item that displays curated content choices across multiple services. It is also adding support for Spanish, German, and Portuguese to Roku’s voice-enabled keyboard functionality, and a new automatic speech clarity setting that also adds Standard, Dialogue, Movie, Music, and Night sound modes on Roku streambars and speakers.

The Roku mobile app is being updated to be a better companion experience as well. It will display more information about the content you’re watching and help you find the services that support specific movies and TV shows. And a new Roku Save List will let users bookmark movies and TV shows to watch later.

Roku OS 11 will begin rolling out to supported Roku streaming devices in “the coming weeks.”
