IMDb TV Becomes Freevee and Increases Focus on Original Shows

IMDb TV, Amazon’s ad-supported video streaming service will be rebranded as Freevee starting April 27 (via Deadline). This will be the third name change for the service that initially launched as IMDb Freedive back in 2019.

If Netflix, Prime Video, or Disney+ dominate the streaming conversations these days, advertising video on demand (AVOD) services like IMDb TV, Pluto TV, or the Roku Channel have been slowly but surely increasing their investments in quality content. Just this year, Amazon is planning to increase the number of original shows on Freevee by 70%.

“Over the past two years, we have seen tremendous growth for our AVOD service and are committed to bringing our audiences premium, free-to-consumer content,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios. “We’re looking forward to building on this momentum with an increasing slate of inventive and broadly appealing Originals, and are excited to establish Freevee as the premier AVOD service with content audiences crave.”

IMDb TV is currently only available in the US and the UK, but Amazon plans to launch it in Germany later this year after the service gets rebranded to Freevee. The AVOD market will be an interesting one to observe in the coming months, especially with Disney planning to launch an ad-supported version of Disney+ later this year. YouTube will also be another player to watch as the platform recently made 4,000 TV Show episodes free to watch in the US.
