YouTube TV Starts Rolling Out New Multiview Feature

Google has started rolling out a new multiview feature on YouTube TV that will let subscribers watch up to 4 streams at once. Multiview is currently in early access, and it will become available for all YouTube TV users over the next few months.

This new multiview feature leverages the existing technology allowing YouTube users to start a live stream together. Multiview also won’t require special hardware as all the processing to display 4 streams at once happens on the server side.

Currently, Multiview is restricted to select channels picked up by YouTube TV. However, the feature should appeal to sports fans, especially those following the current NCAA March Madness basketball tournament.

Two (or four) is better than one: Building multiview on YouTube TV

“During early access, some members will begin to see an option to watch up to four pre-selected, different streams at once in their “Top Picks for You” section. After selecting multiview, viewers will be able to switch audio and captions between streams, and jump in and out of a fullscreen view of a game,” the YouTube team explained.

Google is already planning to allow YouTube TV users to create their own multiview streams by picking up the different channels they want to keep an eye on. Last but not least, the YouTube team said that it’s “looking to bring this multiview experience to the main YouTube app across TVs later this year.”
