Netflix to Release 40 Mobile Games This Year as Work on Cloud Gaming Tech Continues

Netflix announced today that it’s planning to launch 40 new mobile games this year, which will join the 55 titles already available for subscribers on iOS and Android. Leanne Loombe, VP of External Games at Netflix also confirmed that 70 new games are being developed by third-party developers, in addition to 16 games being developed by Netflix’s own studios.

Netflix made its first mobile games available back in November 2021, and the company intends to create a large collection of games that can appeal to everyone. “This year we’re going to continue building our portfolio — and that means new games every month,” Loombe said today. “Members will discover indie darlings, award-winning hits, RPGs, narrative adventures, puzzle games and everything in between, and we’re working with the world’s leading studios to bring you these games.”

Netflix’s VP of games Mike Verdu announced back in October that the company was working on its own cloud gaming technology. In a briefing with reporters today (via TechCrunch), Leonne confirmed that this work is still underway.

“Again, we are very early in that side of our journey, but we are committed to making sure that games can be played wherever you have Netflix. We do believe that cloud gaming will enable us to provide that easy access to games on any screen. Our overall vision is that our members can play games on any Netflix device they have,” the exec said.

If Netflix is clearly enthusiastic about games right now, the current focus on mobile games may not have really paid off yet. According to recent data from Apptopia, less than 1% of Netflix subscribers were engaging with these mobile games on a daily basis.
