Google Tests AI-Generated Video Summaries on YouTube

Google has started testing AI-generated summaries for YouTube videos. The experiment is currently only visible on a limited number of videos in English, and the YouTube team is currently testing these AI-generated summaries on both watch and search pages.

“We’re starting to test AI auto-generated summaries on YouTube, so that it’s easier for you to read a quick summary about a video and decide whether it’s the right fit for you,” the YouTube team explained (via Android Police). “While we hope these summaries are helpful and give you a quick overview of what a video is about, they do not replace video descriptions which are written by creators.”

Before using AI to create video summaries, Google previously allowed content creators to have YouTube create automatic video chapters for their videos. While not all videos on YouTube are eligible, automatic chapters can already help can users quickly navigate to the part of a video that’s potentially most interesting for them.

With AI-generated video summaries, Google is going a step further, but it actually isn’t the only company to use AI to automatically summarize content. Windows Insiders can now see AI-generated review summaries on the Microsoft Store, and Amazon is also experimenting with a similar feature on some of its store listings.
