PlayStation Will No Longer Remove Discovery Shows From Users’ Libraries

PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4

Sony is backtracking on its decision to remove all purchased Discovery content from the libraries of PlayStation gamers on December 31, 2023. In a statement shared with Gamesindustry.biz, the company said that PlayStation users will keep access to the Discovery content they purchased “for at least the next 30 months.”

That’s thanks to an “updated licensing agreement” with Warner Bros. Discovery, the current owner of the Discovery brand, which according to a recent report from Axios may be exploring a merger with Paramount Global. Anyway, Sony did the right thing and clarified what PlayStation users can expect in the near future.

“Similar to other services, we do not own the licensing rights to TV/movie content that was previously available for purchase on PlayStation Store,” PlayStation said in the update. “However, we’ve worked with Warner Bros to update our licensing agreements, ensuring that consumers will be able to access their previously purchased content for at least the next 30 months.”

The original news sparked a debate about what digital ownership really means today. If you can lose access to the movies and TV shows you bought on the PlayStation Store, what about your digital games? Obviously, it was in Sony’s best interest to clear out any FUD around its platform, but again, Sony’s current agreement with Discovery won’t last forever.
