Disney+ Starts Cracking Down on Password Sharing in the US

Disney+ is about to start cracking down on password sharing in the US. The Verge is reporting that the platform is now emailing subscribers in the country to warn them about its updated terms of service, which will be more restrictive regarding password sharing.

“We’re adding limitations on sharing your account outside of your household, and explaining how we may assess your compliance with these limitations,” the email reads. The streaming service also explained that it can “analyze the use of your account to determine compliance.”

Disney Plus’ new terms of service are already taking effect for new members in the US, but they will apply to existing subscribers on March 14. The streaming rolled out a similar update for its users in Canada back in November.

On a support page about password sharing, the platform explains users cannot share their subscriptions outside of their household. Disney+ defines a household as “the collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence that are used by the individuals who reside therein.”

Earlier this month, the Disney-owned Hulu streaming service also announced a similar update. The platform’s new terms of service will also restrict account sharing to members of a household starting on March 14.

Netflix also started restricting password sharing last year, with a twist: The company now allows users on its Standard and Premium subscriptions to add up to two extra member slots for $7.99 each per month.
