Spotify Loosens its Restrictions on Song Lyrics for Free Users

Spotify is expanding access to song lyrics for Free users after restricting the information to Premium subscribers earlier this year. Since May, Spotify Free users could only see lyrics for a maximum of three songs per month, and Spotify has now raised this limit to an unspecified number, according to TechCrunch.

“At Spotify, we’re always testing and iterating. This means the availability of our features can vary across tiers and between markets and devices. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be expanding lyrics availability for Spotify Free users so more people can enjoy viewing more lyrics, globally,” a company’s spokesperson told TechCrunch yesterday.

It was quite absurd for Spotify to put access to lyrics behind a paywall when this information used to be free for all users. Moreover, Spotify is now offering auto-generated transcripts for podcast episodes, so there needs to be some consistency regarding the availability of both podcast transcripts and song lyrics for all users.

Earlier this month, Spotify announced that it crossed 626 million monthly active users and 246 million paying subscribers in Q2 2024. During the company’s earnings call, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek confirmed that the company was still working on a “deluxe version” of Spotify offering higher audio quality and other perks for an extra $5 per month on top of a Premium subscription.
