Amazon Prime Video is now leveraging generative AI technology to intelligently recap what users recently watched on the service. The new feature called “X-Ray Recaps” is an extension of the existing X-Ray feature that let users identify actors on the screen and other details about a movie or TV show.
“X-Ray Recaps is a generative AI-powered feature that creates brief, easy-to-digest summaries of full seasons of TV shows, single episodes, and even pieces of episodes, all personalized down to the exact minute of where you are watching,” the company explained. “Whether you’re a few minutes into a new episode, halfway through a season, or took a break from watching a series and need a refresher, X-Ray Recaps delivers short textual snippets of key cliffhangers, character-driven plot points, and other details that can be accessed at any point in your viewing experience.”
Amazon created X-Ray Recaps using its in-house Bedrock AI platform and custom AI models. The AI-generated recaps are created by analyzing dialogue information and video segments to identify key events in a movie or TV show. The company also says that it has implemented guardrails to provide a spoiler-free experience with these AI-generated recaps.
As of this writing, X-Ray Recaps are available in beta for Fire TV users in the US, but they only work on Amazon MGM Studios Original content. That includes shows like The Boys, Daisy Jones and the Six, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and The Wheel of Time.
X-Ray Recaps can be accessed from the X-Ray experience when hitting pause as well as the Prime Video detail page. Fire TV users can then choose to recap the episode they’re watching, the current season, or the previous one.
Amazon is planning to enable X-Ray recaps on other platforms than Fire TV by the end of the year. However, the company didn’t say when these AI-generated recaps will become available on films and TV shows that don’t come from its own studios.
