Google Photos is joining Spotify and other services offering 2024 recaps. Starting today, Google Photos users can check the app to see if their 2024 Recap is ready to view, and a small subset of US users will also get an exclusive Recap memory powered by Google’s Gemini AI.
“Your Recap memory highlights memorable photos and moments from your year, paired with fun graphics and cinematic effects,” said Tommy Meaney, Product Manager, Google Photos. “Aside from your Recap memory, you’ll also receive insights — fun and surprising tidbits about your year based on the photos you took, like your longest photo streak, who you smiled most with, who you took the most photos of, the top colors you photographed and your 2024 vibes.”
2024 Recap is only available for users who have enabled the Face Groups setting in Google Photos. This is the feature that automatically groups photos based on faces that appear in them, and it’s not available in all regions.
If you turned on notifications for Google Photos, the app will let you know when your 2024 Recap is available. The yearly recap can be shared with others, and it will remain available in your Memories carousel throughout December before automatically moving to your photo grid next month. As I mentioned earlier, a subset of US users who opted into using Gemini-powered features in Photos will also receive an exclusive Recap memory with personalized captions describing their two biggest highlights of the year.
