Spotify Now Supports Group Chats on Mobile

Spotify group messages

The Direct Messages feature that Spotify launched on its mobile app back in August now supports group chats. Conversations are limited to 10 users per chat, and group chats offer the same user controls and safety features as one-to-one conversations.

“We love all the feedback on Messages,” the Spotify team said today in an update to the original post announcing the new messaging feature (via TechCrunch). “That’s why, starting today, you can now share to a group through Spotify Messages. Share the podcasts, playlists, and audiobooks you’re listening to with up to 10 friends and family members per chat, and keep the conversation going directly on Spotify.”

Spotify messages are currently hidden behind the sliding menu that appears when you tap your profile picture. To create a group conversation, you’ll need to tap ‘Create group’ and then choose friends from your suggested list. Alternatively, group messages can be created from the app’s sharing menu.

People you contact for the first time on Spotify will get a message request that they can either accept or block. It’s also possible to turn off Spotify messages entirely by going to Settings and privacy > Privacy and social > Social features.

Spotify currently has more than 700 million users, so it makes sense for the music streaming service to add private messaging features. You may remember that YouTube also had its own DMs system a couple of years ago, and it recently came back as a test in select markets.
