Disney+ has brought back support for Dolby Vision and 3D in Europe after resolving a patent dispute with Interdigital, a US-based company developing advanced video technologies. The legal conflict forced the company to disable the premium formats last month, though 4K quality and HDR 10 support were still available.
“Dolby Vision and 3D support have now been restored on Disney+. As a result of a lawsuit at a German patent court, we were forced to make changes to the availability of certain advanced video formats in Germany and other markets,” the company said in a statement to FlatpanelsHD.
Disney+ currently restricts HDR 10, Dolby Vision, and 3D to its ad-free Premium plan, which is priced at $18.99/month in the US. 3D movies are also streamed in the Dolby Vision format, and they’re only available on the Apple Vision Pro.
Disney said that it “worked as quickly as possible to implement solutions that ensure viewers the best possible experience on their devices and subscriptions.” However, the company didn’t compensate Premium subscribers in Europe affected by the temporary removal of Dolby Vision and 3D support.
In other news related to Disney+, the platform launched this week Verts, a new TikTok-like feed of vertical videos in its mobile app. Verts is currently only available in the US, and Disney hopes that it will become “an entirely new way for fans to connect with the stories they love.”
