The Walt Disney Company announced a new content-sharing deal with TikTok to bring fan-created videos to the Disney+ app. In the coming months, Disney+ subscribers in the US will start seeing Disney-themed videos from TikTok creators within the app’s ‘Verts’ video feed.
“TikTok will offer their creators access to assets related to hundreds of films and series from Disney’s vast library of enduring franchises and beloved IP. Fans will enjoy a shared Disney experience with TikTok videos that will be refreshed regularly to engage subscribers more deeply in timely fan conversations, building stronger communities, and ultimately, helping them engage with more story formats across Disney+,” the press release reads.
You may remember that Disney previously announced a content licensing deal with OpenAI that allowed over 200 Disney characters to appear in AI-generated videos created using ChatGPT and the startup’s Sora video generator. However, the deal ultimately fell through after OpenAI shut down Sora to refocus its resources on a new “super app.”
Disney isn’t the only streaming service to introduce a vertical video feed to its mobile app to keep users engaged. Netflix added a similar video feed earlier this year featuring short clips promoting the platform’s movies and TV shows. However, Disney opted for a different approach with fan-created videos.
““The best storytellers are fans first,” said Asad Ayaz, Chief Marketing and Brand Officer at The Walt Disney Company. To attract the best creators, Disney and TikTok will also operate together the Disney Creator Ambassador Program, which will offer special rewards, access to exclusive events, and more to participants.
