Netflix Testing Instagram-Like Feed on Its App

Netflix is testing an interesting new feature on its mobile app. The company is testing a new Instagram-like feed on mobile devices with a limited number of users.

Variety reports that the new feed, simply dubbed “Extras”, gives users the ability to view pictures, videos, trailers, teasers, etc. for upcoming Netflix shows. It’s almost like a feed where you can find out what’s coming up next, based on shows you have already watched.

The feed can show galleries that you can scroll horizontally like Instagram, and it even shows video trailers and other clips from a show on the feed. Users can also choose to get notified about an upcoming show, add a show that’s already available to their list, or share the show with their friends via third-party apps.

Netflix says the new feed is only a limited taste for now, and may not become permanent. “We are testing a feed of video extras in our mobile app to help fans connect more deeply with the titles they love and discover new ones to watch. These tests typically vary in length of time and by region, and may not become permanent.”

This wouldn’t be the first time Netflix will push something like this inspired by social networks. The company currently shows Stories-like previews for most of its popular shows that allow users to get a sneak peek at shows before starting to watch the full thing. It’ll be interesting to see if this new Extras feed makes it past the testing.
