Spotify Now Hosts Over 100,000 Video Podcasts

Spotify announced today that there are now over 100,000 video podcasts available via its mobile app and service, up from 70,000 in March.

“Since we’ve made video podcasts available for creators in nearly every market, the medium has become core to the Spotify podcast experience, with shows all around the world utilizing the format to deepen engagement with fans,” the company’s announcement post explains. “The U.S., Brazil, Mexico, the U.K., and Germany publish the most video podcasts, but we’re also seeing great adoption in markets like the Philippines, where video podcasts account for over half of podcast consumption.”

Spotify dominates the streaming music business with 210 million paying subscribers and 515 million active monthly users overall, and it has embraced adding other types of audio content to its service, including podcasts in 2015, and video podcasts and audiobooks in 2022. Meanwhile, it has struggled to bring obvious features to the music side of the house, most notably high-quality lossless music, a feature it announced in 2021 but never delivered.

But Spotify has also upended its podcasting business, moving from an expensive strategy to hire big-name talent and studios and release exclusive shows via its in-house studio to a more traditional ad-based model in which the firm can take better advantage of its huge audience.

Separately, Bloomberg reports that Spotify is considering adding full-length music videos to its service too. This will help Spotify better compete with TikTok and YouTube.
