Site Update: Notifications And Updates To Comment Platform

One of the big feature requests we have received during the past year is notifications on the site. Starting today, that feature is enabled for everyone and this will make it easier to follow threads in the forums, news posts on the front page and track replies to comments you have made.

This platform has been in the works for several months and is the result of listening to your feedback about how you want this feature to function; I want to give special recognition to Tim and Drew who built this feature for the site.

On the top right of the front page, you will see a bell icon, this is the notification area where all of your alerts can be viewed. Further, there is a management console that allows you to easily turn off individual notification triggers from a single page.

In the notification window, you can mark all notifications as ‘read’ or click on them for a deep link into the respective event that triggered the notification. You can also find a link to the settings page that is the management console for all the notifications on the site.

We have also enabled email notifications when you turn on an alert by following a post or thread; you can have email alerts show up immediately or never; we will likely introduce a once-weekly option at a later date.

Finally, we have made some general improvements to the comment platform that makes commenting and replying a little bit more refined. Couple these improvements with the notifications and it makes it much easier to stay informed of the interactions on the posts and comments that you create on Thurrott.com

This is the first iteration of the notification system on the site and we fully expect it to evolve over the years as we add more functionality to the site. For now, give it a spin and let us know what you think and if you find any bugs, make sure to post them here.

This is great! I am so happy that notifications has launched to keep the readers informed on their site comments, forums and the posts they are interested in watching.

In reply to jrswarr:

A fair critique, though I can assure you we tested thoroughly. I'm convinced there is no amount of testing that can take into account the wonders of IE and Edge.

It would be great if the notification pop-up listed the actual title of the post/thread, rather than just saying "…commented on a post you're following".

</p>

NIce feature. I don't see how to mark a particular notification as "read". There's a "mark as read" link but it doesn't appear to do anything. I'm using Chrome and I'm not a premium user if that matters.

Looks great, guys. Thanks for the feature. I've been giving it a test run today. One question: Is is possible to delete the notifications once they have been read? I could see the list getting unruly pretty fast.
