It was mentioned that Microsoft put $10 billion into Windowsphone and was now saving money. Of course $7.2 billion was on Nokia. It would have been better off letting Nokia go under and saved that money. It made no sense buying it and writing it off. It wasn't wasted on phone because it was dead money. The money didn't go into phone but just buying year or so of time. If they had actually put $7.2 billion into a phone strategy and failed that would have been different. Wasted cash is not the same as investing.
