Gamification and the social-media capability of exercise has been so very much enhanced with the advent of smart phones with GPS. I use the website / App Strava every day to track my commuting on a bike (https://www.strava.com/athletes/31581498) One of the most powerful features is its use of segments, which automatically apply to whatever route I take on a bike or on foot. This has given me an additional motivation to get to my destination and check out my results, seeing how my speed / heart rate and power compare with the other times I've traveled those segments.

Weight loss is a great side-effect (I'm down 65 lbs this year), but the most important aspect is lifestyle change, as short-term dieting efforts rarely deliver long lasting, healthy change.
