The Sams Report EP 90: A New Hope for Windows Phone Fans

The Sams Report is a weekly podcast that dives deep into the world of Microsoft. With the company transforming the way it operates and Nadella putting his own touch on all aspects of the organization, the Sams Report breaks down the news and offers insight from insider sources.

On this episode, I cover everything from the past week including insane travel, a new Surface Pro, Build hangovers, privacy and new hope for Windows Phone fans.

The latest episode on iTunes (and other aggregators) seems to be the Build one from May 12. Is there a lag?

About every device acting as a phone:

Living in Germany I have a 0700 phone number which, among other features, allows to configure forwarding calls to many phone numbers in parallel. I configured my 0700 number to ring in parallel on my landline and Skype number. The Skype number rings on my phones, Surface Pro and Desktop. This enables me to receive and make calls on any of my devices.

Difficulties with this are configuring a single voice box with email notifications correctly and receiving text messages as text. Frequently one of the parties involved changes their services without notification and suddenly a different voice box picks up, especially when a device is busy in a call. Since a while SMS messages to Skype numbers are no longer delivered immediately as text but after about 5 min via undecipherable quick machine voice. This makes SMS to Skype numbers unusable for authentication codes. MS just removed personalized voice greetings from voicemail, again without any prior notification. Another problem is people being afraid that calling a 0700 number might incur high charges.

Similar problems may or may not exist with T-Mobile Digits and/or the expected MS ARM-Phone solution.

Let's just hope developers finally see and are buying into this latest incarnation of the Mobile vision. It would appear that with Windows 10 S, the move to ARM, and progressive web apps, that this is the perfect storm of technologies to allow MS to at least be in the conversation again.

I am one of the people that thought Microsoft should have bought Spotify a long time ago.

My question about Groove would be; If I can buy a family plan for 5 copies of Office 365 for the home in the UK for £7.99 why doesnt Microsoft offer me a Groove family plan?

There lies the problem with Microsoft's "consumer strategy". Actually they haven't got one just a few random products that sometimes sell well with consumers. It fully explains why they missed mobile. To compete in a market you have to understand it.

Enjoyed this talk.

Not sure I follow on pervasive AI yet… seems to be an American dream involving tremendous amounts of energy and technology. Not sure this is the future for many….
