Tips and picks

Tip of the week: Enable the new Chrome UI today

Chrome is getting a Material Design Refresh overall in September. But you can enable it now.

App pick of the week: Parallels Toolbox

Updated alongside Parallels Desktop 14 for Mac, this affordable package can solve some real problems.

Enterprise pick of the week: What the heck happened to Office 365 late last week?

Were you among the Office 365 users last week who couldn’t sign-in/authenticate your Office 365 apps? You were not alone (especially if you’re an iOS/Mac user). Your problems *should* be fixed, but MS isn’t talking about what happened.

Also: Be aware, as of September, to get features that come along with Office 365/Office 2019 for Mac, users will need to be running at least macOS Sierra 10.12.

And: Recheck that Ignite session list. Now there are more than 1,100 of them! Lots of stuff on improvements to Windows Update (but not fewer updates, as far as it looks from the list) and more

Codename pick of the week: Project Largo

Xbox All Access – it’s a thing! Coming ‘soon’? Thanks for the Project Largo codename, Walking Cat.

Beer pick of the week: Evil Twin (and Hoof Hearted) collab: That’s What Happens When You Let Dad Outta the House

A sour IPA brewed with pineapple, guanabana, vanilla and milk sugar. And yet another amazing beer name from Evil Twin, the geniuses of craft beer names.

Mark your calendars

Ignite 2018 in Orlando: Windows Weekly will be live at the show on Tuesday, September 25. No RSVP – attendees can come to the podcast center and join. Meetup is happening too. Details to come.

Dublin or bust: We’re going to Dublin in October and will be doing Win Weekly live from the MicroWarehouse cloud camp. October 17. There will be a meetup, too. Details to come.

Regarding the HP Envy X2, @MaryJoe and @Paul you might give it another try. I’m running RS5 in S Mode, and the Envy X2 meets my use case, which is similar to @MaryJoe.

The X2 with Windows on ARM performs as well as the Surface Go. I had at Go but returned it after two weeks.

My experience differs sharply from the constant bashing you dish out on WIndows Weekly week-after-week. I highly recommend the Envy X2 as long as you leave it in S Mode. Install an adblocker and Edge will surprise you.

Why should ANYONE optimize for a particular browser? How about we have a thing called a STANDARD that all BROWSERS must comply with if they want to attract users?

And, good grief, sticky notes? I don't understand why this is even a thing. Good grief.

I hate Nadella. Without qualification, I despise the man and wish he'd leave the country.

No. Everybody DOESN'T love Minecraft. I find the entire premise absolutely pointless.

Hi Paul,

I’ve subscribed to Parallels Toolbox and love it, I’m used to using Camtasia. However, the videos I capture will not play! I generally use VLC, then windows 10 built-in video player. Can you please suggest why the video captures will not play? VLC error says ‘your input can’t be opened’. I’ve moved the files to different locations, to check/test windows 10 file protection.

FYI, it is a pleasure listening to you and Mary Jo, on windows weekly. I look forward to Leo returning from his holiday!

Many Thanks,

Damian
