Google announced yesterday a new wave of updates for its new Gemini for Home assistant, which is now available in early access in close to 20 countries. The new assistant now offers faster responses for managing smart home devices when speaking English, French, and Spanish, and it’s also getting better at distinguishing standalone commands from follow-ups.
“By optimizing how we process device commands and home layouts, you may notice a significant speed boost—up to 1.5 seconds—when controlling your lights or plugs,” Google announced yesterday. Gemini for Home should also be much faster for setting alarms and timers and executing custom smart home routines.
As part of these updates, the Google Home app for iOS and Android is also getting new features and improvements. When a device goes offline, the app will now display account-relinking prompts to fix the issue in one tap. The in-app feedback reports will also let users share more diagnostic information with Google.
To reduce the occurrence of “offline” messages and slow response times, Google announced the launch of Google Home Vitals, which will give its hardware partners a new set of tools to monitor integration health. “As partners adopt these new tools, you can look forward to a future where your lights, locks, and cameras respond faster and more reliably stay connected—ensuring your home works exactly how you expect it to across the Google Home app and Gemini for Home,” the company said yesterday.
Lastly, the Google Home app is getting a redesigned casting experience that improves access to playback controls and Cast-enabled devices. An updated Camera experience is also rolling out with faster search, clearer event descriptions, and simplified settings.
To get early access to Gemini for Home, you’ll need to open the Google Home app and go to Home Settings > Early Access. However, you’ll probably need to be patient. “We’ve slowed the ramp slightly to ensure the language, localization and regional tuning are where they need to be for all of the countries. It’s taking a little longer than I first anticipated, but we’re expanding every day,” said Anish Kattukaran, Chief Product Officer, Gemini for Home & Nest devices over a week ago.
