Google has updated its Home app to add support for Google Workspace accounts. The company acknowledged that many people in the Google ecosystem use paid Workspace accounts in place of Gmail accounts to access Google services, and adding support for Workspace users in the Home app has been a top-requested feature.
“Workspace accounts can now participate fully in home sharing,” Google explained yesterday. “Previously restricted, you can now invite others to your home or accept invitations to join existing homes, making it easier to collaborate on smart home control with family and friends.”
Back in 2019, Google began pushing users of Nest smart home products to migrate their Nest accounts to personal Google accounts. Now, Nest accounts can also be migrated to a Workspace account. Google Home users signed in with a Workspace account are also getting the ability to set up Nest devices within the app.
Google is still warning users not to use employer or school Workspace accounts they don’t own to manage their smart home with the Google Home app: In case the organization revokes access to the account, users will lose access to their Google Home and all its associated devices.
Lastly, the Google Home app still has some restrictions in place for Google Workspace accounts: It’s currently not possible for these users to enroll in early access for the Gemini for Home voice assistant, and personal results and other Google Assistant features are also unavailable.
