The Story of C++: The World’s Most Consequential Programming Language is now available for free on YouTube. It’s a must-watch documentary for anyone interested in software development, of course, but also in personal technology in general.
“C++ The Documentary, from CultRepo, explores the language’s remarkable journey, from its beginnings in the halls of Bell Labs to its place at the center of modern computing,” the Computer Science department at Columbia University explains. “Featuring the people who created it, expanded it, debated its direction, and championed its survival, the documentary offers a firsthand look at the history, evolution, and enduring impact of one of software’s most consequential technologies.”
The documentary covers the full history of this influential and persistent programming language and in addition to obvious luminaries like C++ creator Bjarne Stroustrup and key contributors like Andrei Alexandrescu, Andrew Koenig, and others, it features appearances by Microsoft’s Anders Hejlsberg (who created Turbo Pascal, Delphi/Object Pascal, C#, TypeScript, and so much more), game maker John Romero, Herb Sutter (former software architect for C++ at Microsoft), Chris Lattner (creator of Swift), and many others from the industry.
