Google is Coming for Your Fitbit Account

Google announced today that it will begin transitioning Fitbit accounts to Google accounts this summer, with the transition mandatory by 2025.

“Beginning this summer, there [will be] a new way to log in to the Fitbit you know and love — with a Google Account,” Google vice president Majd Bakar announced. “If you’re an existing Fitbit user, you will have the option to move your Fitbit experience to a Google account. You aren’t required to move to a Google account immediately, but [you] will need to move by 2025. If you’re a new Fitbit user, you’ll be required to register with a Google account this summer.”

According to Bakar, those transitioning from a Fitbit account to a Google account will have the same Fitbit experience with all of their historical health and wellness data still available. And as the firm promised regulators, your Fitbit data will never be used for Google ads, and it will continue to be kept separate from Google ads data.

With this transition, users will also manage their Fitbit data in the Google Privacy Center so they can keep their health and wellness data secure. It also promises rather vaguely that customers will “get more Fitbit experiences” with this switch.
