Games with Gold: October 2016

I can’t believe it’s October already, but one of the best things about September flying by is that it’s time for Games with Gold again. As always, Xbox Live Gold subscribers have four new free games to look forward to, two for Xbox One and two for Xbox 360.

Reminder: All Xbox 360 games in the Games for Gold promotion also work with Xbox One in Backwards Compatibility mode too. So Games with Gold is particularly nice for Xbox One owners.

Here’s what we’re getting free this month.

Xbox One

baseball

Super Mega Baseball: Extra Innings
Normal pricing: $19.99
Availability: October 1 to 31

Description: Super Mega Baseball packs ultra-tight batting/pitching mechanics, a novel difficulty system dubbed “Ego”, and a deep baseball simulation with accurate physics and comprehensive statistics tracking. In addition to solo play, players can try their hand at head-to-head, 2v1, 2v2 and co-op against the CPU. In co-op mode, teammates alternate batting/running each time at-bat, and alternate pitching/fielding each inning, meaning ballplayers need to be on their toes every play. To even games, players can use the Ego system to set up a competitive game between friends of any skill level.

escapists

The Escapists
Normal pricing: $19.99
Availability: October 16 to November 15

Description: The Escapists is an award winning prison break simulation that provides players the opportunity of experiencing a light-hearted insight into everyday prison life. Whilst the aim of the game is simply to escape, the detail is in the execution. (Don’t say the word execution too loud in a prison). You may not be in an open prison, but you are in an open world where in between attending rollcalls, mealtimes and doing your chores you should grab every chance to plan your escape. Do you do favors for other inmates earning money and boosting their opinion of you along the way? Or workout and become stronger? Read to increase your skills or spend your time crafting items into homemade weapons and tools. What about working diligently in your prison job, to gain promotions to new jobs with better benefits? Keep a low profile or go out all guns blazing, as long as you escape in the end, that’s all that matters.

Xbox 360

mtv

MX vs ATV Reflex
Normal pricing: $19.99
Availability: October 1 to 15

Description: Lean your rider to take tighter turns and higher jumps as you power your bike independently. Avoid catastrophic wrecks with separate controls for the rider and vehicle. Dual controls let you tear it up with death-defying tricks and high-flying freestyle action. Fight for traction while you dig up the track to force the competition to carve new race lines. Grip tight and hang on, you’re in control!

alive

I Am Alive
Normal pricing: $29.99
Availability: October 16 to 31

Description: One year after a worldwide cataclysmic event has wiped out most of human civilization, a man struggles for survival. Faced with an insecure, decaying, and hazardous world, he scours a desolated city, searching for his long lost wife and daughter. Survive the suffocating, murky streets covered in dust. Climb the teetering remains of the last standing skyscrapers to reach breathable air and find untouched resources. Explore the crumbling ruins of a once-thriving metropolis. And discover a changed human condition, punctuated by distrustful survivors, dangerous armed gangs, and victims in need.

it would be of value if you indicated which games you have personally played. It adds credibility to the writeups

Being in GMT+10 timezone it’s day two of the month for me… Lots of refreshing overnight to see what games came out :)

Often the 360 games are of more interest than the XB1 games – last really good one for me was XCOM.

I agree with Simard57 – it’d be great to hear if you (Paul and/or Brad) have played any of the games and what you think of them.

I just "buy" them but download very few. I am so far behind in games, but it is silly not to utilize this as a benefit for the Gold program.

Not a brilliant lineup this month compared to some in the last 1/2 year, but with AAA titles like Forza Horizon 3, GoW4, Titanfall 2 and the latest DLC for Destiny, its not hard to see why MS doesn’t want to give out great games this time and potentially lose the sales of the cash cows during this period.

They’re still better than the dreck Sony gives out most months on PS+. My god they scrape the bottom of the barrel sometimes (well, a LOT of the time).

Not sure why it’s worthwhile to readers to post things that aren’t currently available. Would be nicer to see them posted at time of availability.
