Samsung Has Reportedly Fixed the Galaxy Fold After Redesign

Samsung’s much talked about Galaxy Fold device may soon make its way to the public once again. After the company was forced to cancel pre-orders of the device following major early issues with the foldable display breaking, Samsung delayed the product with a lot of uncertainty.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Samsung has now completed a redesign of the Galaxy Fold. The two-month long redesign has apparently fixed the Galaxy Fold’s foldable screen, with Samsung introducing some major changes to come over the problems.

Samsung CEO said earlier this week that he’d pushed for the device’s launch even before it was ready and that the company is widely testing the new device after it identified even more issues with the product. Bloomberg says Samsung has stretched the protective film covering the foldable screen to the entirety of the screen, even including the outer bezels, making it impossible to peel off by hand. The company even re-engineered the hinge design, moving it slightly upward from the screen, making it flush with the display to help stretch the protective film even further.

The redesigned implementation of the film apparently makes it imperceptible to the naked eye and is designed to reduce the chances of any creases developing in the middle of the screen over time, which was a major problem in the early Galaxy Fold units.

Samsung is yet to decide on official sale date for the new Galaxy Fold, however. The company will apparently start shipping components for the device to start assembly of the new devices, though it’s not decided on an official sale date just yet. It is unlikely Samsung will announce the new device at its Unpacked event on August 7 where the company is expected to introduce its Note 10.

I don't personally have any interest in a folding phone, but I AM interested in seeing where the technology for the "bendable glass" goes. Looking forward to seeing Samsung release this, just out of scientific curiosity. That said, though… the price MUST come down if they actually expect to sell any.

I'm still intrigued, as they'll have to make that plastic EXTREMELY durable if they expect it to take off in any way. The reason we use glass is, of course, that it's far less prone to scratching, and is typically smoother when swiping across the screen. For me, it's a question of "can they make the plastic FEEL like glass? Time will tell?
