Microsoft Acknowledges Issues With its Latest Xbox Controller Firmware Update

Microsoft has acknowledged today that its latest firmware update for Xbox wireless controllers released on February 25 is causing some issues. Following the release of the firmware update last month, many Xbox gamers on Reddit have been complaining about aiming issues in shooters like Fortnite.

On February 25, the Xbox team said that its new Xbox controller firmware update brought “improvements to thumbstick auto-centering, trigger adjustments, and mouse-to-thumbstick inputs.” However, one Reddit user posted a capture of a conversation with the Xbox Support team on X that may explain the cause of the unexpected sensitivity issues.

“Many users have reported that the analog sticks snap back to 0% on their own, making small adjustments difficult. This problem seems to be linked to a new “virtual dead zone“ feature introduced in the update, which automatically corrects the joystick position when it approaches zero input. Unfortunately, reverting the firmware on newer controllers isn’t possible,” the support agent explained.

While the Xbox team said today that it’s “actively working on a solution,” it’s recommending users encountering issues to try to revert their controller’s firmware to an earlier version. On Xbox consoles, this can be done using the Xbox accessories app, and you can find detailed instructions on this support page.

These Xbox controller issues aren’t the end of Microsoft’s Xbox software troubles this week, however. Xbox Insiders on the Alpha and Alpha Skip Ahead rings have been complaining about the latest preview updates deleting their user profiles and settings after the installation was completed. Microsoft acknowledged the issue on Reddit earlier today and said that it has already rolled out a fix.
