YouTube is testing a new AI feature to show users relevant information about what they’re searching on the platform. It takes the form of a carousel at the top of search results with a selection of relevant video clips, with each of them showing an AI-generated headline and summary.
These new AI-powered search results carousels are only available on mobile, and they may only appear on searches related to shopping, travel, or things to do in a specific place. If a carousel is generated, the video clips in it will automatically play in the order they appear.
To try this new experience, YouTube Premium members will need to sign up on the webpage where YouTube lists experimental features. Overall, these AI-powered carousels are a bit reminiscent of the AI Overviews that Google is testing at the top of search results in select markets, with a video twist.
In addition to this new AI feature, the YouTube team also announced today that it was expanding access to its conversational AI tool to a subset of non-Premium users in the US. On mobile devices, the experimental tool can answer questions about a video as it continues to play, summarize it, suggest related content, and more.
